Purpose: Digital literacy is an essential component in today¡¯s modern, information-oriented society. However, the elderly population tends to exhibit a lower level of digital literacy compared to other age groups, requiring targeted education and intervention to improve it. Providing smartphone education is widely considered the most effective and practical approach to enhancing digital literacy among the elderly. This study aims to investigate the impact of smartphone-based education on the health and overall quality of life of the elderly.
Method: A mixed research method that combines quantitative and qualitative research was conducted. For quantitative research, a pre-post 1:1 survey was conducted, and the subjects¡¯ socio-demographic characteristics, depression, self-efficacy, and cognitive function were surveyed. For qualitative research, a focus group interview was conducted, and the life experience of the subjects was investigated after intervention education. The intervention program consisted of six weekly smartphone education sessions held at a welfare center and a local library in Wonju, Gangwon-do.
Results: After participating in smartphone education, the subjects showed significant reduction in depression and improvement in cognitive function. Additionally, the subjects reported positive life changes, including increased convenience in their daily lives, improved confidence, a stronger desire for learning, and the formation of new social connections.
Conclusion: Smartphone education can play a crucial role in enhancing the mental, cognitive, and social well-being of the elderly and helping them better adapt to an increasingly information-driven society. To promote healthy and fulfilling aging, it is necessary to actively promote and develop digital literacy education through the use of smartphones.
